Picking The 2016 Golden Globe Award Winners

I love watching sports. I love watching wrestling. I love listening to Heavy Metal....And I love these big award shows.

Not the Grammys so much, but I always have enjoyed the Emmys, Oscars, and the Golden Globes. Grammy Awards are generally given to music that I think is mostly garbage, but these awards for television and movies I think still go to the most deserving. The best stories. The best movies. The best performances. So every year I usually fill out a ballot and then compare it with my dad and mom for bragging rights. There will be some (educated) guesses here, but for each pick I make below I will give you my reasoning behind it.

You can download your own ballot (courtesy of Pop Sugar) here.

In no particular order, except the one I copied from the official Golden Globe site...

BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

a. CAROL
b. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
c. THE REVENANT
d. ROOM
e. SPOTLIGHT

Okay, so I've heard of "Room," "The Revenant" looks interesting, "Carol" I have NO idea about it and I'm not about to look it up now. "Mad Max" I saw and I loved and I would LOVE it to win, but i think "Spotlight" is going to take it. Interesting/true story, with some Boston ties so I'm aware of it - though I'll probably never see it, even if it is an award winner, which I think it will be.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

a. CATE BLANCHETT (CAROL)
b. BRIE LARSON (ROOM)
c. ROONEY MARA (CAROL)
d. SAOIRSE RONAN (BROOKLYN)
e. ALICIA VIKANDER (THE DANISH GIRL)

"Room" is the ONLY movie I have heard of here, and even that I'm not really aware of. But Cate Blanchett gets awards, so I'll say she takes this one.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

a. BRYAN CRANSTON (TRUMBO)
b. LEONARDO DICAPRIO (THE REVENANT)
c. MICHAEL FASSBENDER (STEVE JOBS)
d. EDDIE REDMAYNE (THE DANISH GIRL)
e. WILL SMITH (CONCUSSION)

Okay with these movies...Yeah, I've seen none of them, but I've heard of most of them (No idea what "The Danish Girl" is). I love Bryan Cranston, so I want him to win - and I think he will.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

a. THE BIG SHORT
b. JOY
c. THE MARTIAN
d. SPY
e. TRAINWRECK

Where are the musicals? How "The Martian" is listed here and not under Drama is a mystery to me, but it needs to win somewhere, so it will win here.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

a. JENNIFER LAWRENCE (JOY)
b. MELISSA MCCARTHY (SPY)
c. AMY SCHUMER (TRAINWRECK)
d. MAGGIE SMITH (THE LADY IN THE VAN)
e. LILY TOMLIN (GRANDMA)

My wife went to see Jennifer Lawrence film some of "Joy" in Haverhill so this pick is for her, who is excited to see this. Plus she always does a pretty great job. Be cool if Amy Schumer could pull this out though.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

a. CHRISTIAN BALE (THE BIG SHORT)
b. STEVE CARELL (THE BIG SHORT)
c. MATT DAMON (THE MARTIAN)
d. AL PACINO (DANNY COLLINS)
e. MARK RUFFALO (INFINITELY POLAR BEAR)

No idea what this movie with Mark Ruffalo is. All these other guys look like they put in some interesting performances. But I think the Martian will be a big winner including here with Matt Damon taking the trophy.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – ANIMATED

a. ANOMALISA
b. THE GOOD DINOSAUR
c. INSIDE OUT
d. THE PEANUTS MOVIE
e. SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE

It was a basically a pick between one Pixar movie an the other. No idea what "Anomalisa" is. Going with "Inside Out" because it's the one that I think had the most buzz.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – FOREIGN LANGUAGE

a. THE BRAND NEW TESTAMENT (BELGIUM / FRANCE / LUXEMBOURG)
b. THE CLUB (CHILE)
c. THE FENCER (FINLAND / GERMANY / ESTONIA)
d. MUSTANG (FRANCE)
e. SON OF SAUL (HUNGARY)

Total Guess. Heard of none of these.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE

a. JANE FONDA (YOUTH)
b. JENNIFER JASON LEIGH (THE HATEFUL EIGHT)
c. HELEN MIRREN (TRUMBO)
d. ALICIA VIKANDER (EX MACHINA)
e. KATE WINSLET (STEVE JOBS)

Based on the trailers alone, Jennifer Jason Leigh looked like she gave a cool performance, so I'll go with her.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN ANY MOTION PICTURE

a. PAUL DANO (LOVE & MERCY)
b. IDRIS ELBA (BEASTS OF NO NATION)
c. MARK RYLANCE (BRIDGE OF SPIES)
d. MICHAEL SHANNON (99 HOMES)
e. SYLVESTER STALLONE (CREED)

It's gotta by Stallone. It just has to.

BEST DIRECTOR – MOTION PICTURE

a. TODD HAYNES (CAROL)
b. ALEJANDRO G. IÑÁRRITU (THE REVENANT)
c. TOM MCCARTHY (SPOTLIGHT)
d. GEORGE MILLER (MAD MAX: FURY ROAD)
e. RIDLEY SCOTT (THE MARTIAN)

I would LOVE it if George Miller wins this category. He did an amazing job with Mad Max, but I think this is the Martian's year and Ridley Scott takes it.

BEST SCREENPLAY – MOTION PICTURE

a. EMMA DONOGHUE (ROOM)
b. TOM MCCARTHY, JOSH SINGER (SPOTLIGHT)
c. CHARLES RANDOLPH, ADAM MCKAY (THE BIG SHORT)
d. AARON SORKIN (STEVE JOBS)
e. QUENTIN TARANTINO (THE HATEFUL EIGHT)

Nobody writes like Tarantino. I feel like if he writes a screenplay, it deserves to be nominated. Aaron Sorkin annoys me. These other guys, don't know or care.

BEST ORIGINAL SCORE – MOTION PICTURE

a. CARTER BURWELL (CAROL)
b. ALEXANDRE DESPLAT (THE DANISH GIRL)
c. ENNIO MORRICONE (THE HATEFUL EIGHT)
d. DANIEL PEMBERTON (STEVE JOBS)
e. RYUICHI SAKAMOTO, ALVA NOTO (THE REVENANT)

Another guess.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG – MOTION PICTURE

a. "LOVE ME LIKE YOU DO" (FIFTY SHADES OF GREY)
b. "ONE KIND OF LOVE" — LOVE & MERCY
c. "SEE YOU AGAIN" (FURIOUS 7)
d. "SIMPLE SONG #3" (YOUTH)
e. "WRITING'S ON THE WALL" (SPECTRE)

I chose the song from Spectre, but as long as 50 Shades of Crap and Furios 7 can't say they're Golden Globe winners, I'm okay with that.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA

a. EMPIRE (FOX)
b. GAME OF THRONES (HBO)
c. MR. ROBOT (USA)
d. NARCOS (NETFLIX)
e. OUTLANDER (STARZ)

Ah TV, where I'm much more comfortable. I watch 3 of these series. I would love it if Mr. Robot wins this. Game of Thrones has had its time. Narcos was just amazing, so I'm going to say it gets the award.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA

a. CAITRIONA BALFE (OUTLANDER)
b. VIOLA DAVIS (HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER)
c. EVA GREEN (PENNY DREADFUL)
d. TARAJI P. HENSON (EMPIRE)
e. ROBIN WRIGHT (HOUSE OF CARDS)

I think Robin Write is great on House of Cards, but I know Empire is hugely popular and Taraji P. Henson seems to chew up the scenery, so I'm picking her.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – DRAMA

a. JON HAMM (MAD MEN)
b. RAMI MALEK (MR. ROBOT)
c. WAGNER MOURA (NARCOS)
d. BOB ODENKIRK (BETTER CALL SAUL)
e. LIEV SCHREIBER (RAY DONOVAN)

John Hamm's time has come and gone, right? Right? Never watched Mad Men and I'm not really that interested in it. I would love it if Bob Okenkirk won, or even Rami Malek. Both gave great, very different, performances. But Wagner Moura made me anxious every time he was on the screen as Pablo Escobar, he HAS to win this.

BEST TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

a. CASUAL (HULU)
b. MOZART IN THE JUNGLE (AMAZON VIDEO)
c. ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK (NETFLIX)
d. SILICON VALLEY (HBO)
e. TRANSPARENT (AMAZON VIDEO)
f. VEEP (HBO)

Hello major networks. Do you see ANY of your shows here? If this doesn't say something about the world of network television, I don't know what does. Six shows nominated. Two of them on HBO, the other four on streaming services. My favorites are the HBO shows. I love Veep and Silicon Valley. Transparent already has some trophies, give this one to Silicon Valley.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

a. RACHEL BLOOM (CRAZY EX-GIRLFRIEND)
b. JAMIE LEE CURTIS (SCREAM QUEENS)
c. JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS (VEEP)
d. GINA RODRIGUEZ (JANE THE VIRGIN)
e. LILY TOMLIN (GRACE AND FRANKIE)

The CW is represented! I watched Scream Queens and thought Jamie Lee Curtis was really good. I'd be happy with her winning, but I think Julia Louis-Dreyfus is winning this one.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A TELEVISION SERIES – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

a. AZIZ ANSARI (MASTER OF NONE)
b. GAEL GARCÍA BERNAL (MOZART IN THE JUNGLE)
c. ROB LOWE (THE GRINDER)
d. PATRICK STEWART (BLUNT TALK)
e. JEFFREY TAMBOR (TRANSPARENT)

I would LOVE it if Rob Lowe won this one. He is so great on The Grinder, but I think Jeffrey Tambor is getting this one again.

BEST TELEVISION LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

a. AMERICAN CRIME (ABC)
b. AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL (FX)
c. FARGO (FX)
d. FLESH & BONE (Starz)
e. WOLF HALL (PBS)

Fargo is one of the best things I've watched on television this year. It has to win, right? Horror Story is still interesting, with some great performances, but it just wasn't great this year.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

a. KIRSTEN DUNST (FARGO)
b. LADY GAGA (AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL)
c. SARAH HAY (FLESH & BONE)
d. FELICITY HUFFMAN (AMERICAN CRIME)
e. QUEEN LATIFAH (BESSIE)

Anything attached to Fargo I think should win. So Kirsten Dunst should win this. I can't pick anyone over her.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

a. IDRIS ELBA (LUTHER)
b. OSCAR ISAAC (SHOW ME A HERO)
c. DAVID OYELOWO (NIGHTINGALE)
d. MARK RYLANCE (WOLF HALL)
e. PATRICK WILSON (FARGO)

People love Luthor. I'm going to watch it someday. I think Idris Elba is great, but he wasn't in Fargo - so give this one to Patrick Wilson. Okay then...

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

a. UZO ADUBA (ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK)
b. JOANNE FROGGATT (DOWNTON ABBEY)
c. REGINA KING (AMERICAN CRIME)
d. JUDITH LIGHT (TRANSPARENT)
e. MAURA TIERNEY (THE AFFAIR)

Uzo is great on OITNB (though I'm a season behind) but I'd love to see some Who's the Boss love, so give this one to Judith Light.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES, LIMITED SERIES OR MOTION PICTURE MADE FOR TELEVISION

a. ALAN CUMMING (THE GOOD WIFE)
b. DAMIAN LEWIS (WOLF HALL)
c. BEN MENDELSOHN (BLOODLINE)
d. TOBIAS MENZIES (OUTLANDER)
e. CHRISTIAN SLATER (MR. ROBOT)

I think it would be great if Christian Slater won. He was really good in Mr. Robot. But Ben Mendelsohn was un-freaking-believable in Bloodline. He has to win.

FINAL SCORE: We'll see tonight!
